Return to Throw

Pitchers' Rehab & Return-to-Throw Program The Davis Way: Stronger Arms, Smarter Recovery

Softball pitchers are elite athletes—but the repetitive nature of pitching can lead to overuse injuries if arm care is neglected. At Davis Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab, we specialize in guiding pitchers through recovery and return-to-throw protocols that prioritize strength, stability, and longevity.

Why Arm Care Matters

Even though underhand pitching is considered more “natural,” it still places significant stress on the shoulder, elbow, and wrist. Without proper care, pitchers risk:
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Rotator cuff strains
  • Elbow tendonitis
  • Overuse injuries

Our rehab and return-to-throw program is designed to prevent these issues while optimizing performance.

Phased Return-to-Throw Outline Phase 1: Recovery & Protection

  • Rest from pitching
  • Ice and soft tissue work
  • Gentle stretching of shoulders, triceps, and forearms
  • Hydration and nutrition support

Phase 2: Activation & Mobility

  • Light cardio warm-up (jogging, jumping jacks)
  • Dynamic stretches (arm circles, torso twists)
  • Sport-specific drills (wrist flicks, easy tosses)

Phase 3: Strength & Stability

  • External Rotations with resistance bands
  • Scapular Squeezes to stabilize shoulder blades
  • Wrist Curls to protect the elbow

Phase 4: Controlled Throwing Progression

  • Gradual increase in pitch volume
  • Monitor pitch count closely
  • Avoid back-to-back heavy throwing days

Phase 5: Mechanics & Performance

  • Work with PT or coach to refine mechanics
  • Integrate arm care into daily training
  • Maintain consistency for long-term arm health

Keys to Long-Term Arm Health

  • Monitor pitch count
  • Prioritize rest
  • Fine-tune mechanics
  • Stay consistent with arm care
